Question: How long have you been a business consultant?
Answer: I founded Optimum Performance Technologies in 1998 and have been working as a consultant for over 16 years.
Question: What was your professional experience before you became a consultant?
Answer: I worked in a number of diverse industries (heavy equipment, business machines, cosmetic containers, precious metal products, and both durable and disposable medical devices) before becoming a consultant. My background spans more than 30 years and includes engineering, technical management, quality management, and operations management. For the last 15 years of my corporate career, I ran businesses ranging in size from 35 employees and $3.5M in sales to 250 employees and $80M in sales.
Question: What is your educational background?
Answer: I hold a B.S in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from Brigham Young University, and a MBA in Operations Management from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Question: Why did you leave a successful business career to become a consultant?
Answer: I love helping people and businesses succeed, and I felt that I could have a more effective impact and better utilize my skills by working independently to serve my customers.
Question: As a consultant, do you consider yourself to be a generalist or a specialist?
Answer: Both. While I do specialize in the areas of profitability improvement (cost reduction, productivity improvement, time management), business planning, and leadership development, one of the benefits my clients get is my ability to utilize a broad base of business knowledge and experience to look at their businesses holistically. That translates into an accurate assessment of the impact of proposed changes on the overall organization.
